Night clothes, which we choose to wear even before we fall asleep, are a matter of personal taste. While some people are perfectly happy wearing loose striped pajamas, others choose to sleep in a delicate silk set or even with nothing on their body. But, after all, where did the habit of dressing appropriately to go to sleep come from?
From India to the world
The worldwide use of pajamas, in fact, is a direct result of the British presence in India in the 18th and 19th centuries. Considered a type of uniform for the gentry, at that time pajamas were already worn by men and women, having originally become known as “clothing to cover the legs”. Later, as they became popular, these pieces were seen, for many years, as a luxurious and comfortable option for relaxing.
What were our ancestors' pajamas like?
Much of what we learn from history comes from what was left behind. However, in the past, pajamas were considered a private matter: any type of nightwear was intended only for the eyes of the wearer and their family. Therefore, today we don't have many direct examples of what pajamas could have looked like hundreds of years ago. In the Middle Ages, most pajamas did not have a specific shape, with only royalty wearing more elaborate pajamas. These designs were inspired by Indian, Asian and Roman costumes – large, dress-shaped and with wide sleeves to provide greater comfort.
Why can pajamas be a good gift?
Pajamas are the perfect symbol of our downtime. And we all know that new outfits are always welcome in our closet. Need more reasons to update the pajamas you're wearing tonight?

It's functional .
For the most part, pajamas are made for sleeping in, but some could almost be worn as regular clothes. This is especially true for men's pajamas, which are often real jogging pants.
It's always missed .
All pajamas are different – and we all miss them, regardless of the variety of models we keep in our drawers. As with regular clothing, the fabric of pajamas also wears out. Precisely for this reason, new pajamas will always be appreciated.

The future of pajamas
One of the trends that we will possibly continue to see in the future is the normalization of pajamas inside and outside the home. With the traditional and formal aspects of culture dissipating globally, more people will feel comfortable inside these cozy pieces.
And as pajamas have evolved from loungewear that should never be worn outside the home to regular everyday clothing that can be worn outside, perhaps one day these pieces will be the norm for any non-formal occasion.
